Pressurise India over river issues: BNP
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has urged that the government pressurise India into ensuring a fare share of water in the proposed river-linking project.
The party spokesman Aasaduzzman Ripon on Wednesday came up with the call at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital. He also expressed his party’s intention to extend any assistance needed in this regard.
‘If the government seeks any technical support in negotiating water issues with India, BNP is ready to help,’ said Ripon.
He stressed on the need to make attempts to strike a deal with the neighbouring country so that Bangladesh’s interest remains secured in the planned river-linking project, which, if implemented by India alone, can prove to be devastating for many rivers, including the River Brahmaputra, of the country.
Ripon said it is the duty of the government to ensure fare share of waters of the shared-rivers that run across the borders of India and Bangladesh.
