UN committed to restore stability in Bangladesh
The United Nations Secretary‑General Ban Ki Moon is committed to restore the stability and positive development of Bangladesh, said the UN chief’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
The spokesperson came up with the remark while addressing a daily press briefing on Wednesday.
When a Bangladesh journalist, Mushfiqul Fazal, questioned Dujarric that should UN do more than just expressing concern to restoring democracy in Bangladesh and to hold free, fair and credible elections.
In reply, the spokesperson said Oscar Fernández-Taranco, the assistant secretary‑general in charge of peace building support, has been tasked by Ban Ki Moon to liaise with the Bangladesh government and he is doing just that.
‘Bangladesh, as you know, is a critical partner of the United Nations in many areas. And obviously, we are very much concerned about the violence and the loss of life that's occurred in Bangladesh since the beginning of last year,’ said Dujarric.
A journalist asked to know about Taranco’s meeting with Nisha Biswal, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia.
In reply the spokesperson said, ‘I think it's not fair to assume anything. I'll now see if I can actually get you some facts, as opposed to assumptions.’
