Dhaka: An alleged Yaba trader was killed in a reported shootout with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Gohira in Chittagong city’s Patenga area on Saturday night.

The deceased, Zafar Ahmed, a resident of the area, is the prime accused in a case for five lakh Yaba pills seizure from Chittagong port.

RAB7 commanding officer lieutenant colonel Mifta Uddin Ahmed said a patrol team of the crime busting force challenged a gang of alleged criminals, including Zafar, while they were staying in the area at about 11:50pm.

Sensing the presence of the force, the gang members opened fire to the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

During the gunfight, Zafar received severe bullet injuries while his other associates managed to flee.

Zafar was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

RAB recovered 10,000 pieces of Yaba tablet and two pistols from the scene.

Earlier on 14 May, members of RAB 7 arrested seven people in possession of five lakh pieces of Yaba tablet worth Tk 20 crore from the outer anchorage of the port.
