Dhaka: Saifur Rahman Shohag has been elected as the central committee president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) while Jakir Hossain has emerged as the general secretary of the organisation.

Through the election, the two-day 28th central council of BCL ended at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city on Sunday after a gap of four years.

Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina on Saturday addressed the inaugural session as the chief guest while Prime Minister's Information and Communication Technology adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy was present at the session as a special guest.

Some 64 aspirants vied for the president post and 142 candidates for the general secretary post in the council.

The nomination papers of 35 more aspirants– 14 for president and 21 for general secretary–were cancelled on various reasons, including overage.

BCL president HM Badiuzzaman Sohag announced the date of the council at a press conference held at Madhur Canteen of Dhaka University on 8 May this year.

The BCL held its last council session on 10 July 2011.
