12 get life imprisonment for killing BCL man

Bagerhat: A Bagerhat court on Monday sentenced 12 people to life term imprisonment each for killing a local Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader in Sadar upazila of Bagerhat in 2006.
The convicts are Razzak, Hossain Sheikh, Lavlu, Nazrul, Sattar, Faruque, Shawkat, Nuru, Qamrul, Ziarul, Qader, and Tipu Sultan.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.
Judge of district and session Judges Court Mizanur Rahman Khan handed down the verdict acquitting three accused Talimuzzaman, Russell and Mizanur Rahman.
According to the prosecution, the convicts swooped on Raju, son of Sheikh Nur Islam of Jatrapur village in the upazila, beat him with hammer and strangled him to death at Jatrapur village on the way to a local bazar from his house on 4 September in 2006.
Victim’s father Nur filed a case against 12 people with Sadar Police Station on the same day.
On 21 January 2007, police submitted a charge sheet against 15 people to a court after investigation.
