Verdict meets expectations: Attorney General

Dhaka: Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, welcoming the verdict of Supreme Court which upheld the capital punishment for war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, said he is satisfied with the verdict.
The attorney general on Wednesday morning, while commenting on the verdict of appeal against the death sentence of Salahuddin Quader said the verdict met the expectations.
He said, ‘We were expecting the same. His [Salahuddin Quader’s] action during the war was deadly. If he was not given the punishment, we would be very disappointed.’
Mahbubey Alam said, ‘Salahuddin Quader was convicted in nine charges and condemned with punishment. Salahuddin was handed down with a death penalty in four charges while was given punishment in several phases for other four charges. The court acquitted Salahuddin from the seventh charge.’
He said the court announced a brief verdict today [Wednesday]. The defendants may appeal against the verdict after the full verdict is published.
Denying the claim brought by a group of people that Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was staying abroad during the war, the attorney general said the court did not accept the statement.
The highest solicitor of the state said the report published in Janakantha, a Bangla daily, on the verdict of Salahuddin Quader, questioned the judicial system and spread depression among the people.
Earlier, on Wednesday morning, a four-member appellate division bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed an appeal petition and upheld the death sentence awarded to BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury.
