‘Komen’ weakens
Dhaka: The coast crossing cyclonic storm ‘Komen’ crossed Chittagong coast near Sandwip at about 6:00am on Friday and now lies over Noakhali and adjoining land area as a land depression.
Maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to lower danger signal number 7 but instead hoist local cautionary signal no 3, said a special bulletin of the Meteorological Department.
However, the maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower danger signal number 5 but instead hoist local cautionary signal no 3.
The low-lying areas of the coastal districts mentioned above are likely to be inundated by storm surge of 3-5 feed height above normal tidal level.
All fishing boats, trawlers and marine vessels over North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.
Meanwhile, at least two people were killed in storms triggered by the cyclonic storm ‘Komen’ on Thursday.
In Cox’s Bazar, a man was killed as a tree collapsed on him amid strong wind and heavy rainfall in Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf upazila early in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Ali, Paschimpara area of the Island. At least fifty percent houses were damaged by the storms.
All communications with the island were cut off after 4am.
In Bhola, a housewife, Monzuma Begum,wife of Sobahan Mollah, was killed as a tree collapsed on her at Char Kochuakhali village in Lalmohan upazila early in the morning.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suspended until further notice the operation vessels on water routes throughout the country.
Besides, the authorities suspended ferry services under Roads and Highway Division throughout the country because of the bad weather. The services will remain suspended until further notice, said a media release of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.
