Some 40 shops were gutted as a fire broke out at Moddhobazar in Chandina upazila headquarters on Thursday night.

Chandina Fire Station officer Easin Prodhania said the fire broke out at Maddhobazar Babun Chowdhury market at about 9:00pm and soon engulfed the adjoining business establishments.

On information, three firefighting units from Chandina, Muradnagar and Comilla rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after two hours of frantic efforts.

The source of the fire could not be identified immediately.

The affected businessmen said some 40 shops including cosmetic, footwear, cloth and hardware stores were damaged by the fire.

The extent of losses caused by the fire was estimated at Tk 4 crore.
