Suspected robber killed in reported gunfight

Meherpur: An alleged leader of a robber gang was killed and four police officers were injured in a gunfight between police and the suspected robbers at Rajanagar village in sadar upazila of Meherpur in the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased is Miarul Islam, a resident of Nurpur village of the upazila.
The Meherpur Sadar police said they have arrested Miarul from his village on Saturday evening.
He was wanted in murder and robbery cases filed with three police stations, said police.
After interrogation, police — taking Miarul along — conducted a drive at the village at about 2:00am.
When the police reached near Dindattu Bridge, associates of Miarul opened fire on the team, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight.
Miarul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene.
Police recovered four hand bombs, three cartridges, one LG, one shutter gun and two machetes from the spot.
Four police officers including a sub-inspector, two assistant sub-inspectors and a constable were injured during the incident.
