10 hurt as police, auto operators clash

Dhaka: At least ten people were injured in a clash between the CNG-run auto-rickshaw owners and workers of Narayanganj with police on Monday morning.
The auto-rickshaw owners and workers staged demonstration at Signboard point of Narayanganj at about 10:30am protesting a government decision that came into effect from 1 August banning CNG-run three-wheelers on highways.
The agitated transport workers also blocked two kilometres areas from Narayangaj’s Signboard point to Shiddhirganj’s Shimrail for an hour, which halted the transport movement of both sides of the Highway.
The Narayanganj police said the protesters hurled stones to the police as they went to drove them away from the Highway at about 11:30am.
Police baton charged the demonstrators and opened fire in the air to bring the situation under control.
The law enforcers also held six protestors from the spot.
