‘Niloy victim of govt’s political ploy’
Dhaka: BNP chairperson’s adviser Khandaker Mahbub Hossain on Saturday alleged that blogger Niladri Chaterjee alias Niloy was killed as part of the government’s political ploy.
‘There was a plot behind Niloy murder. They (govt) are trying to send out a message to the global community that there’re fundamentalist and terrorist groups in Bangladesh, and they need to stay in office to eliminate those.’ Mahbub, also a veteran lawyer further said, ‘I believe Niloy has been killed as part of a government’s political trick.’
He was addressing a discussion titled ‘The responsibility of the society for protecting independence and democracy’ arranged by Juba Jagpa at the National Press Club.
Blogger Niloy, who was residing at a rented flat on the 4th floor of a multi-storey building at Goran in the city, was hacked to death at Khilgaon in Dhaka on Friday.
Niloy is the fourth Bangladeshi blogger hacked to death so far this year.
Three other bloggers–Avijit Roy, Washiqur Rahman and AnantaBijoy Das– were killed in similar way since February this year.
Mahbub said the killings of bloggers have taken place one after another, but the mystery behind the incidents is yet to be unearthed.
‘How come the trial of any of these murders could not be held? That means the government is patronising the killers.’
He also claimed that the global community has now understood that Bangladesh is mainly facing political problem for lack of a credible and fair election.
The BNP leader also said the government will face debacle in the face of mass upheaval at any time as it has lost ground beneath its feet.
