Cox’s Bazar: A Cox’s Bazar court on Sunday sentenced a young man to death for killing a minor girl in Teknaf upazila in 2012.

Judge of district and session judge’s court Sadikur Islam Talukdar handed down the verdict.

The convict is Nurul Islam, in his twenties, of Muder Dail village of the upazila.

According to the prosecution, Nurul took Sumaiya Akhter, 5, daughter of the same village, to a place beside her house and snatched her earrings on 6 August in 2012.

As Sumaiya screamed for help Nurul strangled her to death and dumped the body into a pond there.

Nurul went into hiding when her floating body was recovered on 9 August.

The victim’s father filed a killing case against Nurul with Teknaf Police Station.

Later, Nurul made confessional statement to a court admitting his guilt after police arrested him.
