Siraj to die, Akram to serve jail until death
Dhaka: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 awarded death penalty for Bagerhat war criminal Sheikh Sirajul Haque and sentenced Khan Akram Hossain, another war criminal of the district, to jail until death for committing crimes against humanity during the War of
Independence in 1971.
A three-member ICT bench, led by its chairman Justice Enayetur Rahim, declared the verdict at about 12:15pm on Tuesday.
The other two judges of the bench are Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Anwarul Haque.
The tribunal found Shirajul Haque guilty in five out of six charges framed against him and Khan Akram guilty in one charge out of the three.
ICT-1 also found them not guilty in charge number six and acquitted them from the charge.
On 23 June, the tribunal concluded the hearing of arguments from both sides on the trial of 1971 war crimes allegedly committed by Sheikh Sirajul Islam, Khan Akram Hossain and Abdul Latif Talukder, and kept its verdict pending for any day.
Among the accussed, Abdul Latif Talukder died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on 28 July.
The two suspected Razakars are facing seven charges, including killing, mass killing, torture and arson attack, during the War of Independence.
The tribunal on 5 November, 2014 framed charges against them for their involvement in crimes against humanity in 1971.
Police arrested accused Khan Akram Hossain, Abdul Latif Talukder and Sheikh Sirajul Islam on 3 June, 11 June, and 21 July respectively.
