Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Sunday morning received the video footage of a report telecast on private satellite television channel Ekattor and an audio tape of the channel’s talk show that aired a conversation between two judges.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam submitted the tape on behalf of the Ekattor TV as per an earlier Supreme Court order.

A two-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Hasan Foez Siddique fixed 18 August for passing an order in this regard.

Ekattor TV chief editor and managing director Mozammel Haque Babu, National Press Club president Shafikur Rahman, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists faction president Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul were present while the materials were submitted to the court.

On 10 August, the television channel aired a report and a talk show on the conversation between the two SC judges which is sub-judice during proceedings of a contempt of court rule against daily Janakantha editor and its publisher Atiquallah Khan Masud and executive editor Swadesh Roy.

On 11 August, the SC ordered to submit the video report to examine whether the channel committed any contempt of court by broadcasting the news and holding the talk show on a sub-judice matter.

The SC on 13 August delivered a verdict on the contempt of court rule against Masud and Swadesh Roy.

The court on 13 August sentenced them to confinement to the court room for three hours and fined them Tk 10,000 each for committing contempt of court by publishing an article on July 18 on war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s family members.
