Court seeks summary on Mir Quasem’s appeal
Dhaka: The Appellate Division on Tuesday asked the state counsels to submit a concise statement before it within the next two weeks on an appeal filed by convicted war criminal Mir Quasem Ali against his death sentence.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order as the state counsel, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, sought time verbally.
The bench issued the order as the appeal of Mir Quasem, also a policymaker of Jamaat-e-Islami, came up in the hearing list of the SC for an order in the morning.
Earlier on 28 May, the bench asked the defence and the state counsels to submit the concise statement before it within the next four weeks on an appeal filed by Mir Quasem Ali against his death sentence.
The defence side has already submitted its statement.
On 30 November last year, Mir Quasem Ali had filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the death penalty awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal 2 for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
On 2 November last year, the tribunal had condemned the Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali to death for war crimes.
