Dhaka: The government on Wednesday suspended BNP-backed Gazipur City mayor MA Mannan as he has been charged with criminal offences.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperative Ministry issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday.

As the senior judicial magistrate court of Gazipur accepted a chargesheet against Mannan in a criminal case filed with Joydevpur Police Station, he has been suspended as per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, said the circular signed by assistant secretary AKM Anisuzzaman.

On 21 July, the High Court granted bail for three months to GCC mayor and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser MA Mannan in two cases filed with Joydebpur and Kaliakair Police Stations, clearing the way for his release from jail.

Six cases were filed against mayor Mannan with Joydevpur, Kaliakoir and Sreepur police stations on various charges.

Earlier, BNP-supported Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul and Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury were suspended on May 7 and January 7 respectively as they were charge-sheeted in criminal cases.
