Killing in gunfight is legal: IGP

Dhaka: Death of suspected criminals in police gunfight is legal, said Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque following a programme at Police Staff College in Mirpur in Dhaka on Sunday.
‘Police members are legally responsible for the death of anybody in crossfire or gunfight. Police department also conducts in-depth investigation,’ he added.
IGP said, ‘Criminals do not belong to any party. Law enforcers will rigorously restrain them even if they took shelter under the mightiest political party.’
‘When police members conducting operations find their life under threat, they often got involved into gunfight. If anybody dies in the gunfight, that must be a part of legal action. They were hold accountable for their actions. We run executive enquiry in this regard. To improve the law and order, to ensure security of the people, law enforcers on behalf of the government must take all possible steps,’ said the IGP.
