Sudden erosion near Padma Bridge site again

Munshiganj: A 200 metre portion of area in the Padma Bridge project site was devoured by the Padma River at Mawa point on Sunday night.
Witnesses said the mighty river ate up area— 200 in length and 50 metre in width—near the bridge construction yard at Kumarbhog of Mawa point at about 11:30pm due to strong currents in the river.
One jetty, one walkway to the jetty and a temporary plant at the yard also went into the river with the erosion.
Necessary measures were taken to check the erosion with huge bamboos and sand sacks.
Munshiganj deputy commissioner M Saiful Hasan Badal said directives have been given to take proper steps in this regard.
Meanwhile, general manager of China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd, contracting firm of the Padma Bridge project, has started for the project site from China to visit the spot.
Earlier on 27 June, massive erosion started in the Padma which devoured some 100 metre long and 50 metre wid area, one kilometre behind the Padma Bridge project, at Kumarbhog of Mawa point.
