2 get life term jail for killing schoolgirl

Sylhet: A court in Sylhet on Tuesday sentenced two people to life imprisonment for killing a schoolgirl in Kanaighat upazila in 2007.
The convicts were identified as Mostak Ahmed, and Ismail Ali, both in their thirties, of Keor village in the upazila.
The court also fined them TK 50,000 each, in default to suffer six months additional imprisonment each.
According to the prosecution, Mostak along with his fellows Ismail picked up schoolgirl Swapna Begum, 16, from her house in the village on 21 June 2007 as she refused the love proposal of Mostak.
They later took Swapna on to a hillock and slaughtered her to death.
The victim’s father filed a case against Mostak and Ismail with Kanaighat police station.
Later, the accused made confession to their involvement in the killing under the section 164 and implicated the victim’s uncles–Morai Miah and Ahmed–with the murder as revenge.
After examining eight witnesses and the records, Judge of additional District and Session Judge’s court Waliul Islam handed down the verdict acquitting Morai and Ahmed.
