Ex-customs official gets 8yrs in prison

Chittagong: A Chittagong court on Wednesday sentenced a former customs official to eight years of imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for illegally amassing wealth worth Tk 1.94 crore.
The convict was identified as Sheikh Akram Hossain, former superintendent of Teknaf Customs Excise and VAT Commissionate in Cox’ s Bazar and son of late Ibrahim of the city’s Agrabad area.
The court also asked the district magistrate to realise the amount, Tk 1.94 crore, selling his assets and submit those to the state treasury.
Advocate Mahmudul Haque Mahmud, an ACC public prosecutor, said deputy director of Chittagong-2 ACC Syed Iqbal Hossain filed the case against Sheikh Akram Hossain with Double Mooring Police Station on October 16, 2011 for amassing wealth worth Tk 1.94 crore beyond known sources.
On July 24, 2013, Azizul Haque, another ACC deputy director, submitted charge sheet against him. The court framed charges against him on May 7, 2014.
After examining the records and witnesses, Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Mahmudul Haque Mahmud passed the order acquitting two other accused - Akrams’ wife Jahanara Begum and Nilufar Yeasmin—as the allegation brought against them could not be proved.
