Dhaka: The ruling Awami League-backed candidates are leading in the results of the election to Bangladesh Bar Council.

In the polls, the pro-ruling party Sammilita Ainjibi Somonnoy Parishad is leading by 10 seats out of total 14 seats.

They have bagged four seats among seven general posts and six seats among seven group posts.

The candidates who have won the general posts are Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, Abdul Baset Majumdar, Abdul Matin Khasru and ZI Khan Panna.

The candidates who have won the group posts are Kazi Nazibullah Hero of group-A, HR Jahid Anwar of Group-B, Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury of Group-C, Parvej Alam Khan of Group-E, Mohammad Yahiya of Group-e and Mohammad Rezaul Karim of Group-G.

The candidates of BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Panel, who are leading in the general posts, are Khandker Mahbub Hossain, AJ Mohammad Ali, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaimul Haque, who is leading in group post (D).

The election of the Bangladesh Bar Council was held peacefully across the country on Wednesday.

A total of 43,302 voters cast their votes while at least 61 candidates - 32 for general posts and 29 for group posts - contested in the polls.

Of them, 14 elected members will take the office for the next three years.

On 9 July, The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had deferred the election to the Bangladesh Bar Council until 26 August.

Earlier on 21 May, the High Court stayed for three months the election, which was scheduled for 27 May, following objections over the voter list and polling procedure.
