Jhenidah: At least four people were killed and four others injured when a truck crashed into a ‘tempo’, a utility vehicle, on the Jhenidah-Kushtia Highway at Shailakupa in Jhenidah on early Friday.

The dead were identified as Shafiuddin, 40, Rezaul Islam, 40, Mujibor Rahman, 35, and Amirul Islam, 45. All the dead and injured victims are betel leaf traders.

Locals said the accident took place in the area around 6:00am when a truck hit the utility vehicle, leaving its (tempo’s) four passengers killed on the spot and four others injured.

Injured were, Milon, 35, Alamgir, 30, Nurul 40.

Of the injured, Milon were sent to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital while the rest were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

Shailakupa Police sub-inspector Ibrahim Khalil told NTV that the accident took place while the traders were going to Halidhani Bazar in sadar for buying betel leaves.

A firefighting unit went to the spot and joined the rescue operation initiated by the locals.

No one was arrested as the truck driver managed to flee with his vehicle.
