Graft case against Mirza Abbas to continue: SC
Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Monday revoked a High Court order that had quashed the proceedings of a graft case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) against BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas.
A four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the ACC against the High Court verdict.
Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury stood for Mirza Abbas while Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub represented the ACC.
With the Supreme Court judgment, there is no legal bar to continuation of the case in lower court, said Mamun Mahbub.
In 2007, the ACC filed the case against Mirza Abbas with Ramna Police Station accusing him of amassing wealth worth Tk 5.97 crore illegally and concealing information of his wealth worth Tk 3.33 crore.
On 13 October 2010, the High Court quashed the case proceedings acquitting Abbas from the charges.
Later, the ACC filed a petition with the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict.
