Dhaka: BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Tuesday forecast that a national election is imminent as an ‘uneasy condition’ is prevailing within the government.

‘We’re observing an internal discomfort within the government…it gives an impression that an election is round the corner,’ he said.

The BNP leader, however, hoped, ‘That election will be free and fair and a true representative government will be installed in the country through it… democratic practice, the independence of judiciary, human rights, basic rights and press freedom will also be restored and strengthened through it.’

Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths along with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at its founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave marking the party’s 37th founding anniversary.

The BNP leader said their party, which turned 38, has been in a struggle for restoring democracy in the country. ‘We hope we’ll be successful in this drive.’

He lamented that the multiparty democracy Ziaur Rahman had established in the country ending the one-party Baksal rule is now obliterated by the current regime. ‘So, at this time, it’s the big challenge for our party to bring democracy back.’

‘Democracy will be reestablished in Bangladesh Inshallah under Khaleda Zia’s leadership with people’s mandate though a free and fair election,’ the BNP leader said.

He also said if their party returns to power it will empower the administration and police to work independently.
