Lakshmipur: Police arrested two people, including a Juba League leader, from Latifpur area in Sadar upazila, Lakshmipur, in the early hours of Wednesday in connection with the killing of Chandraganj union unit Awami League leader vice-president Omar Faruk.

The arrestees are Ismael Hossain, former joint convener of Chandraganj union unit Juba League and Nurul Islam.

Superintendent of police Shah Mijan Safiur Rahman said a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo in the dead of night.

Police detained them for interrogation in connection with the AL leader murder, the SP added.

Chandraganj union unit of Awami League vice-president Omar Faruk, also a resident of West Latifpur village in Sadar upazila, was shot to death by miscreants in Chandraganj on Tuesday morning.

Quoting witnesses, police said a group of around 5 miscreants in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw swooped on Omar while he was taking tea at a tea shop in Mostafa Shop area at about 9:30am.

The attackers opened fire on the Awami League leader, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he died on way to Noakhali General Hospital.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue.

The Chandraganj police said the reason behind the killing could not be known immediately.
