Dhaka: Awami League senior leader Suranjit Sengupta on Friday urged Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid to take immediate steps to resolve the ongoing crisis of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

‘Teachers of Shahjalal University have been launching a movement demanding removal of its Vice Chancellor from his post. There is an allegation against the VC that he used students to launch attack on the teachers who have been demanding his removal. I urge the Education Minister to take immediate steps to resolve the ongoing crisis of the university’, he said.

‘He (the Vice Chancellor) will have to resign willingly or the Ministry will have to remove him’, he added.

Suranjit, also an AL advisory council member, came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion at the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh.

He also said that SUST VC Aminul Haque Bhuiyan has lost the moral right to stay in his post as teachers alleged that he let loose students against teachers, people came to know through media how students attacked teachers to foil the movement.

Citing the recent survey report over the support of people for the government and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina which reached 66% and 67% respectively conducted by United States-based International Republican Institute (IRI) the Awami League leader also said people have faith and support to the government and the Prime Minister as they don’t want to see terrorism and violence.
