Court removes ban on ‘Rana Plaza’
Dhaka: The Appellate Division rejected a High Court order which banned the screening of Rana Plaza, a film made on the rescue of victim Reshma alive from the ruins of Rana Plaza building, for six months.
A four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha issued the order on Sunday.
Earlier on 24 August, an HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam imposed ban on the film after a hearing on a petition filed by Garment Sramik Association saying that the movie was made ignoring the guidelines set by the court earlier.
The court also stayed the effectiveness of the certificate given by Bangladesh Film Censor Board for the film.
It also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the Censor Board’s certificate for the film would not be declared illegal.
The Information Secretary, the Bangladesh Films Censor Board Chairman and other concerned have been made respondents to the rule, returnable within the next four weeks.
The film, directed by Nazrul Islam Khan, was scheduled to be released on 4 September.
Barrister Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Md Mokhlesur Rahman represented the state.
Rescuers retrieved 19-year-old Reshma under the rubble after 17 days of the worst-ever building collapse tragedy in Bangladesh’s history that left over 1100 people dead in April 2013.
