HC dismisses writ challenging Bar Council poll results
Dhaka: The High Court Bench of the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the writ petition challenging the results of the Bar Council.
A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justices Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Md Ashraful Kamal pronounced the verdict.
On behalf of the state Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Shaju appeared while Advocate Younus Ali Akhand appeared for the petitioner.
Younus Ali Akhand filed the petition yesterday. The petition said that Rule 15(2) of the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners' and Bar Council Order-1972 was violated as the votes were not counted by the chairman but merely tabulated by him. Official results were announced on that basis, the petitioner complained. The writ challenged the legality of the exercise.
After hearing the Court ruled that the petition was not filed, therefore it stood dismissed. It may be recalled that in the Bar Council election held on August 26, 11 of the 14 posts went to the pro-Awami League and like minded ‘White panel’ while the BNP backed ‘Blue panel’ won three posts.
