Lawmaker Bodi chargesheeted in graft case
Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed the charge against Awami League lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for accumulating wealth beyond known sources.
Judge of Dhaka Special Court 3 Abu Ahmed Jamadar framed the charges as the accused failed to submit the wealth statement to the court within the stipulated time.
The court also fixed 6 October for hearing the witnesses of the case.
Meanwhile, Bodi’s lawyer Mahfuzur Rahman Likhon submitted a discharge petition to the court on Tuesday which the court rejected after the hearing and framed the charges against the accused.
As the charge was read aloud before the accused in the dock, he claimed himself to be innocent and demanded justice.
Earlier on 21 August last year, the ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station accusing lawmaker Bodi (Cox’s Bazar 4) of amassing wealth illegally.
As per the FIR, Bodi submitted his wealth statement to the ACC on 23 February, 2014, mentioning his and his family’s wealth worth about Tk 5.2crore. Examining his income tax return, the ACC probe found that he acquired over Tk 16.07crore in last five years (2009-13) and earned illegal wealth worth nearly Tk 11crore.
Bodi in his wealth report also mentioned an additional amount of nearly Tk 2 crore showing a higher price of his sold assets to make it legal.
On 12 October, a Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka sent Abdur Rahman Bodi to jail in the case rejecting his bail petition when he surrendered before the court.
Later, on 27 October, the High Court granted a six months’ anticipatory bail to the accused lawmaker.
