3 get life term for raping woman

Sylhet: A Sylhet tribunal on Thursday convicted three people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment for violating a woman in 2010.

The convicts are Jahur Ali, a resident of Rapasha village in Kamalganj, Koisar Miah, from Baliarbagh village and Sadek Miah, of Sompashi village of Sadar upazila.

Among them, Sadek Miah was tried in absentia.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the woman, who is a housewife, was raped by the convicts at Premnagar tea garden in Moulvibazar district when she went to Civil Surgeon office by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on 22 February, 2010.

Victim filed a case against four people with Sadar Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Later, Detective Branch of police arrested the four.

Abu Zafar, sub-inspector of Sadar Model Police Station, submitted a charge sheet against them on 31 January, 2012.

After examining the records and witnesses, Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Makbul Ahsan handed down the verdict acquitting another accused Faijul Islam as the allegation brought against him could not be proved.
