Doctor Dekhao: An award-wining online doctor-patient platform
At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, due to the lockdown, most of the offices remained closed. Only healthcare institutions, government offices, law enforcement agencies and those who are associated with emergency services were open and were attending office. Everyone was worried about themselves and their loved ones. People who worked for daily wages were facing grave difficulties. Some lost their job without any notice and some people’s offices unexpectedly closed. While all this was going on some people and institutions were working for the betterment of others, despite having the risk to be exposed to the deadly Covid-19 virus. One of such institution was Doctor Dekhao.
At that time, patients could consult a doctor for free through the app Doctor Dekhao. And to make the process more convenient and safer, people were able to collect the prescription online. The app was more useful for Bangladeshis living abroad. Many Bangladeshis living abroad do not have proper paperwork. Many of them decided not to consult a doctor, as that would have meant going outside and the risking of being arrested by the police.
On December 30, at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, Doctor Dekhao became the champion in the Best Innovative Idea category and won the 'Sheikh Hasina Youth Volunteer Award-2020'.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports organised this award programme for the first time under 'Dhaka OIC Youth Capital 2020' in collaboration with Islamic Co-operation Youth Forum (ICYF), OIC Youth Capital, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Social Welfare. The programme was organised in recognition of this unique humanitarian contribution of the youth of Bangladesh.
His Excellency President Mohammad Abdul Hamid was present at the programme virtually as the chief guest at the award ceremony. Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell participated as special guests at the programme.
Durbin Health Tech Limited is the developer of this app. The co-founders of the company are Mohammad Adnan, Mostafizur Rahman, and Md. Touhiduzzaman. The app has already been downloaded 90,000 times from Google Play Store. More than 1 lakh 20 thousand users have registered as users.
About the features of the app, co-founder Mostafizur Rahman said, "Users can take service from us by downloading the app from Google Play Store and signing up. There are two types of doctors in our app. General physician and specialist physician. From the app, people will be able to choose their preferred doctor and make an appointment.
The video call option appears in the patient's app at a specified time. The patient can then call the doctor himself and share the diagnosis report, and previous prescriptions can be uploaded. This app allows doctors to check the patients carefully and write their recommendations in prescription. On the other hand, the patients can now consult doctors and do not have to go outside and increase the risk of catching Covid-19.
Starting from the Covid-19 pandemic, patients had the opportunity to consult doctors for free for a full one year. At present, any patient can see a doctor through the app for just a 100 Taka. At each session, the doctor talks to the patient for 10 minutes.
Many people have smartphones in their hands but they cannot use them properly. So, Durbin Health Tech Limited has launched the Doctor Dekhao app in remote areas of the country. People working in the pharmacy sector can help patients to register in the app. Patients can talk to the doctor while seating in those pharmacies.
Md. Touhiduzzaman, the co-founder of Doctor Dekhao, said, "We have seen in a study that 55 per cent of the people in our country take medicine without a doctor's prescription, showing akbiraj (shaman) or a fake doctor."
"These people have no idea how dangerous unprescribed medicine can be, we can see extreme use of antibiotics among many patients. We are providing alternative income to all those pharmacies without stopping their sales. If we see patients in our app through them, we are giving them a commission. In addition to selling medicines to all those people, he is also getting a fee for showing patients. Patients are also getting doctors' advice." Md. Touhiduzzaman said.
Durbin Health Tech Limited started the work of making the app in 2019. This app was submitted in the Women Delivery Conference-2019 competition that year. And it won the top five startup showcases at Appy Hour.
Mohammad Adnan, CEO of Durbin Health Tech Lab, said, “The Sheikh Hasina Youth Volunteer Award-2020 will inspire us. We are moving forward with long-term plans. I want to get the people of the country accustomed to seeing doctors online. We are working towards the goal of ensuring quality medical care for people from all walks of life."
