Bangladesh Bank heist: Probe body submits report to Muhith

Dhaka: The three-member probe committee, formed to investigate the Bangladesh Bank’s reserve heist scandal, submitted its preliminary report to Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday.
The probe committee, led by former BB Governor Farashuddin, handed over the report to the Finance Minister at about 6:15 pm, reports UNB.
Bank robbers successfully made five transfers out of the Bangladesh bank's account with the New York Federal Bank. The request appeared to come from a Bangladesh server, and they supplied the correct bank codes to authenticate the transfers, the New York Fed said.
Of the $101 million they stole, $80 million ended up in accounts located in the Philippines, and $21 million went to Sri Lankan accounts.
Two other members of the investigation committee were also present during submission of the report.
After receiving the probe report, Muhith told reporters that he would come up with remarks after going through it. ‘I haven’t yet gone through it. Even, I haven’t read a single line of it,’ he said.
He also said the investigation committee will get another two months to submit its final report.
Talking to reporters, committee chief Farashuddin said they submitted the interim report within the 30-day timeframe.
‘Now, the government will examine the report. It's up to the government whether it’ll make it public or not. You should ask the government whatever you want to know,’ he said when repeatedly asked about the probe findings.
Farashunddin, also a former governor of the central bank, said the probe body prepared its report after going through a lot of documents.
‘I'm fully happy with the report. It's a sensitive issue. Let's give the government time to examine it and speak up on the findings,’ he said, advising the reporters to approach him if the government does not publish the report or if it refrains from talking about it. ‘Then we'll speak about it,’ he added.
