Buyers not to reduce business following Gulshan attack: BGMEA
Dhaka: BGMEA, the apex body of the country’s export sector, said on Monday two major buyers of Bangladesh’s apparels have made it clear that they will not reduce business with Bangladesh following the terrorist attack on a Dhaka café.
‘They’ve told us that they will in no way reduce business with Bangladesh,’ President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Siddiqur Rahman told reporters.
He made the comment when asked about the negative impact on Bangladesh’s export as RMG buyers were also among the victims.
BGMEA Senior Vice-president Faruque Hassan and Vice President (Finance) Mohammed Nasir were, among others, present.
The BGMEA President, however, said it is too early to make comment on buyers’ minds as all are on leave due to Eid vacation. ‘We shouldn’t make any comment in advance.’
Asked whether any buyers cancelled their meeting with any exporter, Rahman said they have no such report but mentioned that anybody can cancel meeting anytime for any reason, reports UNB.
He said it is not the time to talk about the attack aftermath but primarily they have felt a shake. ‘In the past, we overcame many challenges, including Rana Plaza disaster. We hope, we’ll overcome the current situation very quickly.’
Rahman said all the people, killed in the attack, were like their close relatives and they were close to their hearts. Some of them have been involved in business here for a long time.
The BGMEA president urged the government and people from all walks of life to remain alert so that such incident does not recur in Bangladesh. ‘We need to be careful about our children so that they do not get involved in criminal activities,’ he said.
He urged all to come forward socially to address the challenge.
Earlier, the BGMEA leaders and journalists present there observed a one-minute silence and offered doa for the departed souls.
Rahman also said festival bonuses have been disbursed among workers in 99.95 factories as the BGMEA visited 1319 RMG factories.
And most of the factories disbursed salary for June month, he said adding that the RMG workers will be able to celebrate Eid peacefully and properly without any problem.
