Dhaka: Country’s inflation has fallen below the target of the current fiscal year 2014-15, as it stood at 6.04% in January, which is also the lowest in 26 months.

The target was fixed at 6.5% for the fiscal ending in June 30.

“The oil price in international market is gradually declining, which has left favourable impact on the price of essential commodities that helped easing inflation,” said Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal while releasing the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) at a press briefing at the NEC-II conference room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

The overall point to point inflation rate was 6.11% in December.

The non-food inflation also came down to 6.01 per cent in January from 6.48% in December.

The food inflation, however, showed a rising trend last month due to disruption in supply due to ongoing problems in the country.

The food inflation in January soared to 6.07% up from 5.86 percentage point in December last, according to the latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

Commenting on the rise of food inflation, the Planning Minister attributed the countrywide disruption of supply chain due to ongoing blockade and hartal unleashed by BNP and its allies.

Apart from the general inflation, the rate of food inflation in urban and rural levels also rose in the month.

The rate of inflation in the urban level stood at 6.48% while in rural level at 5.79.

In the rural level, the food inflation stood at 5.79%, up from 5.78% in the previous month, while the non-food inflation decreased to 5.84% compared to 6.12% in December.

Besides, in the urban areas the food inflation soared to 6.69%, up from 6.07%. But, the non-food inflation witnessed a downward trend and it stood at 6.25% as against 6.99% in December.
