Tax return filing to go online from current fiscal

Dhaka: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is set to introduce digital facilities for tax payers within the current fiscal expecting the new system to double the amount of realized tax, NBR Chairman M Nojibur Rahman said.
‘The individual and corporate taxpayers can file tax returns and get tax certificates through online tax payment system from the current fiscal . . . They will also be able to pay their tax through e-payment,’ Rahman told BSS.
He said the initiative was taken under a programme called Strengthening Governance Management Project (SGMP), which was to connect NBR’s main server with its 649 tax circles of 31 tax zones.
‘The project is scheduled to be completed by November 30 this year,’ the NBR chief said adding that the introduction of the system would double the amount to tax to be collected.
He said NBR took various innovative initiatives including online tax payment system to make a tax friendly environment in line with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith’s directives.
FPT Information System Corporation of Vietnam has been entrusted with the task of implementing the project at a cost of Taka 51 crore to be provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Currently some 18 lakh citizens have taken Tax Identification Number (TIN) in the country but only 12 lakh TIN-holders submit their returns.
