Dhaka: The retail price of most of the spices increased on rising demand before Eid-ul-Azha the second largest festival of the Muslim world.

Wholesaler and retailers at different markets in capital city said the price rise would only sustain during the Eid festival when their demand go high.

According to the market price of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) the price of most consumed spice—onion—however declined during the week ended on Friday. A kilogram of onion was selling at Tk 25-42, which was not less than Taka 35 per kilogram previous week.

TCB’s latest market data showed that prices of ginger, garlic, cumin, cinnamon and cardamom rose ahead in the market when people were buying the spices most essential for making Eid dishes.

Prices of clove and turmeric were static.

At Khatunganj, Chittagong, the wholesale price of ginger was Tk 110 per kg and garlic Tk 165 while their prices at the retail market went up to Tk 140 and Tk 170 accordingly. Early this month, the retail price of a kilogram of ginger was Tk 50 to 60 and for garlic was Tk 130 to 140.

Regarding sharp price hike of ginger, Faruque Ahmed, a spice importer told BSS that they could not import ginger this year to meet the higher demand for Eid.

He said the price of ginger was high in the international market due to lower yield in Indonesia and India.

The prices of cinnamon rose up to Taka 350 from last month’s average price of Tk 280. Similarly, prices of cardamom was up at Tk 1600.
