Security beefed up throughout power sector for Eid

Dhaka: All entities in the power sector have been asked to take extra measures to ensure strict security at power generation plants and power supply establishments across the country during the Eid-ul-Azha times.
This directive came from an emergency meeting at the power ministry in Dhaka with power secretary Monwar Islam in the chair. Heads of all the firms in the country’s power sector were present at the meeting.
According to official sources, the meeting discussed and reviewed the overall security situation at the power generation stations, and transmission and distribution substations across the country.
Such directive came against the backdrop of the security situation that emerged following the last terror attack in the country on July 1, said the sources.
A top official at the PDB said all the organizations under Power Division were asked to be vigilant, specially, during the coming one week of Eid holidays.
He said the officials were directed to ensure uninterrupted power supply through proper operation of power establishments to avoid any power cut.
‘Normally, during such public holidays, power demand drops by 1000 MW. So, there should not be any problem in the generation side as country’s available power generation is now over 8500 MW,’ said Saiful Hasan Chowdhury, director of the PDB.
‘But despite that all were asked to be alert with extra caution,’ he added.
