Probe report on Bangladesh Bank money heist not now: Muhith
Dhaka: The final investigation report on Bangladesh Bank's money heist will not be made public on Thursday as announced earlier, says Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
‘We're not going to publish this report for the sake of getting back the money,’ he told reporters after the Cabinet Purchase Committee meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, reports UNB.
The Finance Minister had earlier announced that the investigation report will be published on September 22.
Muhith informed that he took the decision after consultation with the Law Minister and also the Attorney General.
‘We're now hopeful of getting the entire stolen money back since the matter is under legal process. We're discussing the matter with different countries,’ he said.
A Philippines court on Monday last ordered Banko Sentral ng Philipinas, the central bank of the country, to return about $15.25 million to Bangladesh, a portion of the money which was recovered after stealing from Bangladesh Bank's reserve account.
Bangladesh's a total of $81 million was heist by international cyber hackers from its treasury account with the New York's US Federal Reserve Bank on January 5 this year.
Following the incident, the government formed a 3-member investigation committee, headed by central bank's former governor Farashuddin, on March 19.
The probe body submitted its preliminary report to Muhith in April while the final report on May 30 last.
