New deal signed to import potash fertiliser
Dhaka: Bangladesh decides to import $44 million [about Tk 342 crore] potash fertiliser from Canada.
The government has signed a contract with the Canada government to in this regard.
Canadian Commercial Corporation, the Government of Canada’s international government-to-government contracting organisation, signed the contract with Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, said a press release of the High Commission of Canada to Bangladesh.
The high quality Canadian potash will be mined from member mines of Canpotex Limited which is a joint venture among Potash Producers in Saskatchewan, Canada.
The newly signed contract includes an option to supply additional potash worth about $22 million.
This contract builds on last year’s $40 million contract to supply potash to BADC, which was signed and delivered in 2014. Canada resumed potash export to Bangladesh by a government to government contract in 2014 after many years, said the release.
Canada is one of the world’s largest producers of potash, with about 33% of global potash fertiliser production occurring in Saskatchewan. In 2013, Canada exported CAD $5.8 billion worth of potash throughout the world. Canada has 46% of the world’s potash reserves.
