Kitchen market heated up
Dhaka: People are experiencing huge price hike of essential commodities from the beginning of the Ramadan.
Though the price of meat has increased a little, the price of fish is out of reach of the common people.
The price of meat increased even before the Ramadan. At the first day of Ramadan, beef is selling at Tk 380-400/kg.
However, the price of chicken meat remains the same compared to the price in the previous week. Broiler chickens are selling at Tk 150-160/kg.
Traders say the price of beef will not increase if cows are imported.
Fish traders inform that the price of all kinds of fishes has increased by double. So, they are facing loss as customers are not inclined to buy fish at such a high rate.
The price of vegetables including brinjal, cucumber, lemon and onion that are mostly used in Iftar has increased at a high rate. Brinjal is selling at Tk 100/kg while the price of cucumber, lemon has increased by double. Onion is selling at Tk 50/kg.
The common people say they face and suffer from this price-hike every Ramadan.
One alleged that ‘Cucumbers were selling at Tk 15-20/kg two days ago, today it is Tk 50. Isn’t it necessary to monitor why extra 30-35 taka is being charged?’
However, the price hike did not influence the market of chickpeas, sugar and dal. Also, the price of edible oil has not increased from the last week.
