Dhaka: Lawmaker Nurjahan Begum on Monday demanded ban on Maggi noodles in Bangladesh.
She made the demand on the second budget session of the tenth parliament.
Nurjahan said ‘more than 16 percent lead has been found in Maggi noodles in India. This component can even cause cancer. So I demand ban on Maggi noodles in Bangladesh.’
Stating that Indian High Court has imposed a ban on marketing Maggi noodles, the lawmaker said ‘Noodles worth Tk 400 crore has been destroyed in India due to excessive lead in those. Even the price has been reduced by 25 percent in Bangladesh. The excessive lead in Maggi noodles can harm a baby if any pregnant woman consumes it. It can also cause cancer. So I demand that the commerce minister imposes ban on import and marketing of Maggi noodles in Bangladesh.’
