70% attendance enough to take public exams: Ministry

The Education Ministry has asked all the schools and colleges to allow students failing in test exams to appear at public exams, provided that they have 70 percent attendance.
The ministry in a circular on Tuesday said it has been noticed that in order to maintain 100 percent pass rate or good results in public exams, some educational institutions bar students from appearing at public exams when they fail to come out successful only in one or two subjects in test exams, while some miss the public exams because of sickness, natural disasters, accidents or some unexpected incidents.
The circular, signed by Education Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan, the Education Ministry ordered the heads of all the schools, colleges, technical schools and madrasahs to arrange the test exams with due importance, and as per the directions of the education board, but to allow the students having 70 percent attendance for public exams, even if they fail in the test exams.
The ministry also advised that if any student fails to perform well in test exam, the teacher concerned must be cautioned while extra-care taken for weak and below-performing students.
The managing committees, governing bodies of all the private schools, colleges, technical schools and madrasas should arrange – within one month of the publication of results of public exams – for evaluations of performances of subjects under each teacher as the government wants each student to successfully complete his or her school life, the circular added.
