77.8pc pry students dependent on guidebooks

About 77.8% primary students of the country are dependent on guidebooks, while 36.1% teachers force their students to buy guidebooks, reveals a recent study.
The study, conducted by Sushasoner Jonno Procharavijan (Supro), a network of grassroots NGOs, also showed that 31.1% of the primary teachers are of the opinion that coaching system would contribute towards improving the quality of education while 32% guardians and 44.7% students think coaching is mandatory for education.
Supro published the findings of the study report, titled ‘Social Audit on the Situation of Government Primary Education- 2014’, at a discussion meeting at Azimur Rahman conference hall at The Daily Star Bhaban in the city.
The social audit report was presented by Supro campaign coordinator Sakera Nahar. Supro conducted the study on government primary schools in 24 districts from 1 September – 1 October in 2014.
Speaking on the occasion, National Education Policy Implementation Committee member Kazi Faruk Ahmed said primary education in the country has developed but the quality of education has not improved for the lack of proper coordination.
Dhaka University teacher Mahbuba Nasrin, Supro chairperson Ahmed Swapan Mahmood and its executive board member Hosne Ara Hashi were, among others, present at the discussion meeting.
