Academic activities halted in BUET

Dhaka: Classes and examinations at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have been halted following an assault on a teacher allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists for his Facebook comments on the execution of war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.
The BUET teachers’ association called an emergency meeting on 12 April immediately after the incident and went on a work stoppage for a week demanding prompt actions against the attackers.
The university authorities formed an investigation committee in this connection. The committee has to submit its report within 5:00pm on Thursday.
After the incident no academic activities were held in any departments of BUET.
BUET vice-chancellor professor Khaleda Ekram told NTV Online, ‘no classes and examination have been held since the incident, but we are trying to bring the teachers to classrooms.’
BUET teachers’ association general secretary professor Hasib Chowdhury said the teachers have announced a week-long work stoppage. They will go for further movements if the university authorities failed to take actions against the miscreants.
BUET authorities said around 20 BCL activists headed by BUET BCL president Shubhra Joti Tikadar and general secretary Abu Sayeed Kanak pulled Jahangir Alam, an associate professor of civil engineering department, out of his departmental office room at about 1:00pm on Sunday.
The BCL activists beat him up and dragged him to the cafeteria.
Later, BUET authorities recovered the professor from the cafeteria and sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
However, BUET Chhatra League unit denied their involvement in the incident.
