Helping refugees a core commitment for Nordic countries: Envoys
Dhaka: Nine-year-old Sofia is a Rohingya refugee from Myanmar to Bangladesh. She has lived her entire life in an informal camp in Cox's Bazar. She lives with her mother, three sisters and a brother. She does not go to any regular school.
Sofia was one of the refugees the three Nordic Ambassadors, Johan Frisell (Sweden), Mikael H. Winther (Denmark) and Sidsel Bleken (Norway) met during their visit to the Rohingya refugee camps that ended on Tuesday.
“Helping refugees is a core commitment for the Nordic countries. Combined they are the second largest donor to the UNHCR and are major donors to many UN organisations,” said a press release issued on Tuesday.
Since October 2016, more than 65,000 Muslim Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh as a result of persecution in Myanmar. Besides, 300.000-500.000 Rohingyas have been living in Bangladesh.
The envoys’ visit covered both the Nayapara formal camp under UNHCR, the Leda makeshift settlement, administered by IOM Bangladesh and newly arrived refugees close to Jadimora village.
