Dhaka: The four personal physicians who met BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zai at the Old Central Jail on Saturday feared that she might have suffered a mild stroke, reports the UNB.

‘BNP Chairperson Khalade Zia collapsed on the ground on June 5 but she cannot recall any memory of the incident. We think she suffered a mild stroke,’ Prof SM Siddique of Dhaka Medical College Hospital DMCH Medicine Department, told reporters.

He, however, said more physical examinations of Khaleda needed to be done in a specialised hospital to know for sure whether she had suffered any stroke as well as to know what the present health condition of the former prime minister is.

Earlier, SM Siddique along with three other personal physicals of the BNP chief—Prof Wahidur Rahman, Prof MA Kuddus and Prof MD Alamin—met her at the old central jail at 4 pm.

They have examined her for more than one and half hours, he said adding that a four-page recommendation about her treatment was handed over to the prison authorities.

Asked, Prof Siddique said Khaleda can communicate but there is ‘inertia’ in her.

‘While observing her we have found that she suffered TIA (Transient Iscobic Attack) which is a mild form of stroke,’ he said.

The dangerous thing is that when one suffers TIA, the probability that she may suffer a more serious, major stroke in the days to come increases, the physician added.

Meanwhile, BNP leaders and activists will stage demonstrations across the country on Sunday demanding proper treatment of their ailing leader and 3-time prime minister.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Friday.

He said the programme will be observed in all cities, district towns and all thanas in the capital.

Since March 29, the BNP have been claiming that their chairperson’s health has been very critical, citing it as one of the reasons to demand her immediate release.

Khaleda Zia was sent to jail last February 8, now coming up to 4 months, after a special court sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
