New York Fashion Week is not yet over, but some strong beauty looks for Spring / Summer 2016 have already been revealed on the catwalk.

A sporty streetwear vibe has been a strong theme to emerge from the SS16 collections we have seen so far, and nowhere was this better illustrated than at French label Lacoste. The Olympic-themed collection was presented by models sporting fresh, healthy-looking, rosy complexions that gave the impression they had just finished some track and field event. Hair was loose and natural, either left long and straight or in bouncy curls.

Another house to opt for the low-key look was Alexander Wang, whose 10th anniversary show bore the concept of "no concept". To this end the designer commanded a neutral, street-friendly makeup aesthetic, which saw models looking fresh-faced and naturally cool, save for a lick of eyeliner when required.

It hasn't all been so subtle, however. Drama was provided by the compelling Betsey Johnson, whose show was a theatrical riot of inspirations centered on the theme of dance. The makeup look was bold, featuring sugary metallic lips and rainbow stripes painted over the eyelids and reaching up to the temples. There were also intricate disco nails aplenty, crimped hairstyles and some extremely heavy-handed feline eyeliner.

Riccardo Tisci also channelled the spectacular with a series of facial jewelry pieces ranging from oversized ear studs to beaded, glittering and brocaded masks for his Givenchy show. The makeup was, in contrast, mostly romantic, with soft-hued lips and pale eyebrows the order of the day.

Yet when all is said and done, it wouldn't be New York without a touch of polished glamour. Jason Wu led the way with a timeless yet bewitching take on classic beauty with a striking, deep red lip the star of the show. Eye makeup was kept to a minimum to ensure the maximum effect.
