Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Monday in response to the execution of its leader war crime convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

The party on Saturday released a statement on its website where it termed Muhammad Kamaruzzaman’s execution a ‘planned killing’.

Jamaat acting ameer Moqbul Ahmed announced the shutdown programme minutes after condemned war criminal Kamaruzzaman was hanged at Dhaka Central Jail.

Ambulances, hospital vehicles and fire service and dead-body carrying ones will remain out of the purview of the shutdown programme, the statement reads.

Condemned Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman was hanged at Dhaka Central Jail on Saturday night for crimes against humanity he had committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

Kamaruzzaman was executed by hanging from noose at 10:30pm on Saturday for his crimes against humanity during 1971 War of Independence, confirmed IG Prison Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin.

Earlier Jamaat called countrywide 48-hour from 7 April, Tuesday, protesting the verdict of the Supreme Court which had dismissed Kamaruzzaman’s review petition upheld the death penalty awarded to him.
