8 suspended in JU over sexual harassment

Jahangirnagar University authorities have suspended 8 students temporarily over the sexual harassment to an indigenous female student by Chattra League leaders and activists during the Pahela Baishakh celebration.
University registrar Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the news on Friday.
But the authority has not disclosed the names of the suspended students.
The indigenous female student of Botany department was sexually harassed by five Chattra League leaders and activists on the evening of Pahela Baishakh on Tuesday. The female student submitted a written complaint to the Vice-chancellor of the university on Thursday.
Vice-chancellor Farzana Islam said, eight students have been suspended through administrative order. The names of the accuser and the accused will not be disclosed until the allegation is proved.
Meanwhile, University Chattra League suspended five leaders and activists over the incident. The suspended leaders and activists are Nishat Imtiaz Bijoy, Nafiz Imtiaz, Abdur Rahman Ifty, Rakib Hasan and Nurul Kabir.
Teachers-Students Unity Forum has decided to form a human chain and to hold a rally on the university campus on Saturday protesting the incident. It has demanded permanent suspension of the accused, filing cases against them and ensuring security of the harassed student.
