Jahangirnagar University: Jahangirnagar University students blocked Dhaka-Aricha Highway for three hours on Sunday protesting the assault on a teacher of the university by a police sergeant in the capital.

The agitated students also vandalised a police vehicle and a bus on the highway and beat up a policeman during their blockade from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

The students removed the barricade when they heard that responsible cop was suspended and two bodies were formed to investigate the incident.

Sources said traffic sergeant Imran physically assaulted Rakib Ahmed, an assistant professor of Journalism and Mass Media Department of Jahangirnagar University, at Uttara House Builidng area when he was going to the Airport station along with his parents in his private car at 10:00pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, sergeant Imran has been suspended and closed to the DMP control room on Sunday.

Two separate probe bodies -- one headed by Quddus Amin, deputy commissioner of traffic (North), and another by Iqbal Hossain, deputy commissioner (Uttara crime division), were formed to investigate the incident, said said Jahangir Alam Sarkar, DMP acting deputy commissioner (media).

The committees have been asked to submit their reports within three days.
